Here Comes the Digital Social Security Card

1

Well, it was inevitable. Everything else is going digital. Social Security is following suit. By the end of the summer the Social Security Administration (SSA) will be offering digital Social Security cards.

To get a digital Social Security card you have to have a My Social Security account. If you don’t have one you can create one at https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/. With a My Social Security account, you can also get a current Social Security statement, estimate what your benefit will be at the age you intend to retire, and order a replacement paper card.

Once your My Social Security account is set up, you’ll be able to access your Social Security number online and on your digital devices. The SSA says a digital card means you’ll have immediate access to your Social Security number anytime you need it whether ‘ve lost your paper card or you just can’t remember your number.

Security from hackers and scammers is a number one priority. Cyber security experts say virtually every American adult has had their Social Security number exposed. The 2024 National Public Data breach was so big, it’s believed the entire U.S. population was compromised. Then there was the 2017 Equifax breach which reportedly compromised the personal information of approximately half of all Americans. SSA says it understands that this new digital system has to be secure to keep your information safe.

There will be an announcement from Social Security when the new digital card is functional. And that’s when you need to be very careful. Hackers and scammers will send emails and texts that look like official Social Security communications, trying to get you to verify your personal information. Look at everything with a skeptical eye. Before you click or respond to anything, make sure those communications direct you to legitimate government websites, those ending in .gov. The .gov domain is exclusively reserved for U.S. government organizations at the federal, state, local, and tribal levels.
